Danielle came to visit last weekend and I think I am still recovering. Too much fun in one weekend!

Danielle flew in to New Orleans, and as soon as we got back into Baton Rouge we stopped for daquiris before heading home. After getting dressed up, we headed down to Stroube’s on Third Street for appetizers and drinks with Paige and her sister, Sarah. We walked a couple of blocks to the Old Governor’s Mansion where a fashion show/art exhibit called Transformography was taking place. Each of the models made their way through the various rooms of the mansion, posing along the way so we could take in the outfits. This outfit was the eventual winner, called Auragumi.

Saturday morning was lazy, but we still managed to get to New Orleans in time for a late lunch at the Gazebo Café.  I can’t help myself.  The food is pretty good and there’s always a jazz group playing.  We kinda love the place.

We strolled the French Market, I spilled my Abita all down the front of my dress, and soon enough the siren song of Bourbon Street was calling our name.  While walking down a residential stretch of the street, a group of guys stopped us and asked for directions to a “burger joint on Esperando.”  Sorry guys, we’re no help.  Before they walked on, this one guy goes, “So you’re names are Sarah and Mary, right?”  Why not?  And thus our alter-egos were born.

Here’s the thing.  Two girls out alone on a Saturday night are going to attract a good bit of attention.  Add in the fact that after a few drinks people tend to have the mindset that strangers are just friends you haven’t met yet, and all of a sudden, everyone is wanting to chat it up.  “What’s your name?” and “where are you from?” are the 2 most common questions, sure.  But no one really cares what the answer is.  They just want to talk.  Since I was playing the role of designated driver, I had a lot of fun telling people that couldn’t see straight all sorts of stories.  Maybe it was a little mean, but hey, I was entertained.

I’m getting ahead of myself.  We spent the bulk of the afternoon and evening at The Cat’s Meow, a karaoke bar where a lady from Alabama was having her 40th birthday party with about 20 or so friends.  This is, of course, an amazing idea, and with birthdays only 2 days apart, Danielle and I decided that yes, we are so doing this.  2024…get ready.

The afternoon wore on, the bar became steadily more and more crowded, and we decided to take it to the street. Honestly, you can have just as much fun walking up and down the road there as you can inside any bar.  The people watching is top notch.  We tried a few more bars, but nothing was really holding our interest so we went back for one last round of karaoke before calling it a night and making the painful drive back to Baton Rouge.

Beingnets and café au laits the next morning at Coffee Call followed by a trip down to Valcherie on the West Bank and Oak Alley Plantation.  I’d take it.

We spent Sunday night eating popcorn and watching The Black Swan (even Patrick suffered through it), but turned in early since Monday we had to get up at a normal time.

Paige joined Danielle and I for the ride down to New Orleans.  After dropping Danielle off at the airport and making her promise to come back soon (and bring Tony!), we headed to Magazine Street for some browsing around.  Magazine Street is the shopping district in NOLA, and we had a blast wondering in and out of stores, chowing down at Nacho Mama, and enjoying the sunshine.

All I really want for summer is the perfect fitting pair of boyfriend jeans…not too dark, not too light, not to holey, with fortheloveofallthingsbrightandbeautiful no whiskering.

Despite what these models are trying to tell you, these jeans do not, in fact, exist in the wild.

Ready to dive into my April reading?  On your mark, get set, go!

(17.) The Law School Admission Game: Play Like an Expert

I was thinking about it alot, not not as much, but still thinking nonetheless.

(18.) The Queen’s Daughter

Not what I expected, but a beautiful story about a girl looking for love.

(19.) Pride And Prejudice

Mr. Darcy, you have bewitched me, body and soul.

(20.) Bridget Jones’s Diary

The other Mr. Darcy, you’re not so bad yourself.

(21.) Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason

Yes, other Mr. Darcy, you’ll do just fine.

P.S. Those 2 Bridget Jones books are hilarious.  I have the movies queued up for a night when Patrick is on emergency.  I doubt he’d sit through both of them with me.

Hi.  My name is Megan Loftin and I’m a bibliophile.

I didn’t realize until I began to keep count, but I read.  Alot. For instance, this month, I read a few more books towards my goal and then I …um…. what else did I do?

Let’s take a look.

14. Read 50 books in 2011, 2012, 2013 (21/150)

(17.) The Law School Admission Game: Play Like an Expert
(18.)
The Queen’s Daughter

(19.) Pride And Prejudice
(20.) Bridget Jones’s Diary
(21.) Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason

15. Read the complete works of Jane Austen (1/7)
(1.)Pride And Prejudice

This one count’s twice.  Because it’s my list.

And other than that, this month was a big old fail on the goals front.  I’m pretty ok with that because this is a 3 year marathon and not a sprint, but at this pace I’m going to be done with my books goal in August and what then?  Stop reading so much.  Unlikely.

Other than that, I have been trying to do other things.  For instance, I really need your help with the whole “send a care package to a solider” bit.  I have tried googling for a website that tells you what you can put in a care package and where to send it, but so far no luck.  The best place I have found is USO.org, but you send them $20 and they send a care package.  I think it still counts, but I’d like to do something a little more involved.

Here’s where you can help:

If you know any soliders currently serving overseas who are in need of some TLC from home, please send their info (along with a few helpful suggestions) my way.  Leave a comment on this post and we’ll get in touch.  I want this in the mail before the 4th of July (because I need deadlines for myself, and that’s a pretty good one), so help me hook someone up!

Oh I almost forgot (such is the beauty of automatic investing), but my monthly IRA contribution went in on the first of the month.  May’s already done too.  Yay for retirement!

The only thing I did this weekend worth mentioning:

0508011631

Progress on my lap quilt.  Isn’t that fabric gorgeous?  Wouldn’t it be awesome if that I could find my camera battery charger so I can stop taking pictures with my phone?  Yeah, I should get on that.

Otherwise I spent my weekend working at the house, working at the Loft, and sleeping.  Patrick spent his weekend with emergency after emergency, and almost no sleeping, so I shouldn’t complain too much, but I think I just did.

The good news is that Danielle will be here next weekend, so good times are guaranteed!

My favorite Facebook status update from this weekend: “A princess got married and the villain died.  This weekend was brought to you by Disney.”

I started my weekend at 4am on Friday morning, when I turned on the TV and joined 2 billion of my closes friends to watch William and Kate’s wedding.  It was a real life fairy tale.

Amazingly I made it all they way through work without falling over at my desk.  Friday night Patrick and I watched Tangled, which was fantastic.  I’ve had a girl crush on Mandy Moore since “Candy” and she didn’t disappoint.

Saturday, after cleaning around the house, I went to work for a few hours at the Loft before heading to a crawfish boil at the Vet School.    Patrick and I have been discussing, and neither of us can remember what we did Saturday night.  I do remember eating a hot fudge sundae though, so it wasn’t all bad.

Patrick spent all Sunday morning at school, but we eventually made it out to an apartment complex for a pool party.  The day was warm, the water was cold, the company was great, and there wasn’t a better way to spend a lazy afternoon.

The weekend was a good mix of work and play but Monday came too fast, as it always does.  Can we just all agree to take Monday’s off too?  Please?

This weekend was much quieter than the last.  Not that that’s a bad thing.

Friday night we had dinner with friends at Chelsea’s followed by a round at the Bulldog.  Blue Moon’s help the hot weather go down a bit easier.

Saturday was cleaning day (when you have 3 inside pets, every day is cleaning day).  After working around the house, we headed out to run some errands.  After a quick stop by a thrift store looking for a desk, we drove around a couple of potential new neighborhoods and finally made our way to Lowe’s.  Fun project coming soon!

I headed to work a few hours at the Loft at 4, and once back at the house we had our first ever movie marathon.  It was a big deal, since I’m not much of a movie watcher, especially not a multiple movie watcher.  The Fall of Sam Axe gave us a look into our favorite ex-Navy Seal Burn Notice man, with just the right amount of cheese.   The Social Network reignited a years long debate between Patrick and I on whether or not Facebook.com and Thefacebook.com were the same.  I was wrong.

I know.  I can’t believe I just said that either.

Despite being up early enough of Easter Sunday for church, we still managed to get there late enough to have to sit in the aisle.  It was a nice sermon, even if all I could see was a column.

After a quick lunch, Patrick worked on our project while I got groceries.  I enjoyed a lazy afternoon in the hammock and when it was time to check on horses, I loaded the dogs in the car and we took a walk down on the levee.  It had to have been the nicest night we’ve had all year, and too soon, it was time to turn back towards the car, eat dinner, and prepare for another week.

This weekend. was. awesome.

With great joy, Patrick and I attended the wedding of Brittany and Kyle Allison. Patrick has known Brittany since pre-school and was Kyle’s college roommate. He wasted no time in claiming credit for the union during the rehearsal dinner, and was called out by the priest for this during the ceremony Saturday night. We ate and drank and danced and laughed. We saw friends that we haven’t seen in over a year, we made new friends. We could not have asked for more, and I know that Brittany and Kyle feel the same.

Of course, all was not perfect.

Our Thursday night flight into Charlotte was jinxed while we were driving to the airport, when I said, “Good idea, going up tonight. It is going to be so nice to sleep in tomorrow.”

Patrick agreed, “we’re getting in at 9:30, I’m glad it’s not so late.”

As we headed through security, I saw that our flight was delayed a bit. Didn’t know how much. Once we got to the gate, it was obvious that our flight was delayed just long enough for us to miss our connection into Charlotte. Awesome.

Our gate agent gave us the choice of heading into Memphis, staying the night and arriving into Charlotte at 2:30 pm, or going home, coming back to the airport for a 6:30 flight, and getting into Charlotte at 11:00. Not a hard decision, even though we didn’t really care for either.

We headed back home, tails between our legs, and eased our pain with a bottle of merlot.

Early the next morning, our flight was delayed again. How a 6:35 AM flight is delayed, I don’t think I will ever understand. After running through the Atlanta airport, we made the Charlotte flight by the skin of our teeth and had an on-time landing in Charlotte. Thank the Lord.

We hit the ground running, getting tuxedos and wedding gifts, and after a quick nap it was time for the rehearsal and dinner. Here’s a nice blurry cell phone picture of our table at dinner. It was awesome to catch up with old friends.

DSCN4707

Saturday, Patrick slept in while I did some reading.  After a little bit of lazy, we headed to see his grandma, headed back to the house so Patrick could slip on his tux, and his mom and I dropped him off at the church.  We got a little shopping in before getting ready and getting ourselves to the church.

Soon, all 440 guests were crammed into seated in the church and the service began.  They always look so long in the program, but go by so fast.  It was really lovely, and the man singing almost blew the roof off.  Before we knew it, Brittany and Kyle were official and it was time to party.

And party we did.  After dinner, the dance floor opened and we had a great time getting down, and the party didn’t stop until after the bride and groom were on their way for the night.

Congrats again Mr. and Mrs. Allison!

Sunday morning Patrick’s parents took us to Ashborough, were we met my mom and dad for lunch.  After eating too much, I got in the car with my parents to spend a few days at home and Patrick went back to Belmont with his for a while before flying back to Baton Rouge.

Once back in Hertford (4+ hours later), we headed immediately to the lot to check out all the work my dad has done.  Guys, I’m telling you.  It is going to be amazing.  Pretty sure I made some super insensitive comment about how I was glad I’m an only child so I didn’t have to fight anyone for it one day.  You know I never put my foot in my mouth like that (right) so it had to be good.

Monday I shared a girls day with my mom and grandma’s.  We had lunch together followed by a manicure for me and pedicures for them.  It was a good girls day, even though my dad told me I was too old for dark purple fingernail polish.  What’s that about?

Tuesday it was time to say goodbye.  Too soon I was back at the airport and headed back to the Red Stick.

All together, it was an awesome weekend, we got to be a part of the union of 2 amazing friends and some family time to boot.  What makes a better weekend than that?

Since these all go in a series, I’m giving myself 3 sentences for the first 3 books.

(13.) Outlander
(14.) Dragonfly in Amber (Outlander, Book 2)
(15.) Voyager (Outlander)

These books draw you in, big time and you can’t help but fall in love with the characters.  So maybe one of my future children will have one of these names: Jamie Alexander Malcolm MacKenize Fraser.  I can’t wait to dig into the remaining 4!

(16.)The Exile: An Outlander Graphic Novel
